Lighting The World

This started as a social media post, but (unsurprisingly) I reached the text limit πŸ˜†. What can I say, I’m an over-sharer and I just have to get things out there…which also might explain my big box of journals before I started blogging 😁. And this post is especially meaningful, so forgive me if you see it on my multiple pages and accounts; I have a system to my documentation πŸ˜‰

I’m participating in the #LightTheWorld campaign for December this holiday season and yesterday’s prompt was to share about someone who gives christ-like service.

It’s been running through my mind since yesterday…just ONE person?! No way!

I’ve come to the conclusion that there have been COUNTLESS people in several places we’ve lived over the past few years who have been incredible examples of selfless and Christlike service to others. I’d like to highlight just a few.

When my husband I moved to L.A. in 2008 we gained many new and wonderful friendships, but someone who comes to mind is the ever-helpful Karly Nielsen. Even as a busy mom, her genuine outreach and attitude of inclusion always impressed me.

Our first days in Portland in 2012 were greeted by the smiling face of Ricole Brown! She was due to have a baby any day and yet she focused on engaging with the newbies at church 😜.  I’ve seen her extend the same welcome to others time and time again and offering help whenever possible. We are still the best of friends (even on opposite coasts!) and she continues to inspire me today.

My heart might explode with this next one…we moved to American Samoa in 2016 and I’ve never seen such a body of service-oriented people until experiencing life on this island. These exemplars just give and give and GIVE. The most beautiful part is that they are not just Samoan. They are Tongan. They are Filipino. They are American. Fijianβ™₯️. You have all had such an impact on me and the way I try to live my life.  I love and miss you all and I thank you for the selfless lives you lead. @pollymoli @Reids @datorfamily @anandanfamily @steffmartz.

Okay, my heart’s bursting with this next one, too! We spent 1 year in North Carolina from 2016-2017 and this is where our twins were born. If it weren’t for certain angels helping us navigate the sudden transition from 2 to 4 children by assisting us with meals, playdates, laundry, transportation, taking an hour or 2 with the babies, etc…. there’s no doubt in my mind we would have survived! This all stemmed from the love and concern in their hearts, which love I know is the same love that our Savior has for each one of us. Thank you again to my angel helpers during this stretch of survival mode! Among you: @amyschmutz @sharronyeates @colleenjohnson @katiekuhn

We’re here in Florida now and the examples keep coming. Kellie Moye is one of the sweetest, most complimentary and giving people I have seen. We love you, Kellie, and my girls adore you 😊.

So…I’ve learned a couple of things as I’ve put these thoughts into words. One is that when you take the time to really get to know someone and their circumstances, you then can see what they need and be available, truly available (and sincerely willing), to help them. You will already know them and love them and will WANT to help them!

Another realization I had is that when we surround ourselves with positivity, seeking for good and BEING the good, it’s only natural that someone will be there for us in our time of need, too. I’m so grateful for these wonderful people in my life for demonstrating Christlike attributes and paying it forward. It inspires me to do the same, and I hope it lights a little fire in you as well. Together, we can light the world πŸŽ†
